You can't stop at awareness, and we partnered with Getty Images on the creation of the Black Girls in Britain' Visual GPS Toolkit. To support media, agencies and brands in more accurately representing Black girls, with this first‑of‑its‑kind visual guidelines for marketers and creatives on how to choose and create visuals that accurately represent Black British girls.

Context

When we were considering all the different aspects of Black girlhood and the impact of Adultification Bias, representation of Black girls in media has been and is clearly extremely low globally but particularly in the UK.

This only feeds into the negative perception and harmful stereotypes of Black girls and the behaviour that informs their mistreatment via the pervasive issue of Adultification Bias, when it comes to viewing them as less vulnerable, less childlike, less innocent and so on. This made us break down the nuances around Black British identity and the differences that Black British Girls possess that aren't being reflected on stock archives. Our toolkit will help guide towards the creation of more positive representation of Black British girls, and encourage perception change within media that will as always have a trickle down affect across society.
